Jared Allen announced his retirement this week in what will go down in the history books as one of the best retirement announcements in professional sports.

In an era when official statements that have a distinct PR slant to them are the norm, the 12 year veteran decided to announce his football days were done by riding off into the sunset.

Allen, who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2004 draft by the Kansas City Chiefs before moving to Minnesota, Chicago and ending up on the losing end of the Super Bowl with the Carolina Panthers this year, currently sits tied for 9th along with Julius Peppers on the all-time NFL sack list with 136.

This comes just weeks after Marshawn Lynch, a man not unaccustomed to living outside normal social parameters, announced his retirement by hanging up his cleats, quite literally, on what appears to be a telephone wire.

If this is the newest way to announce retirements, we are excited to see how inventive and innovative our athletes can get with the use of social media.
