The Galway Plate is one of the two feature races this week at Ballybrit and it will be a charge of the light brigade when the tapes go up at 7.20.

Jockeys need to stay out of trouble in the Galway Plate as traffic problems can arise in a field of 22 runners over 14 fences. Getting into a rhythm is important as jumping is put to the test, especially in the straight leading to the uphill conclusion.

I like the each-way claims of the mare 'Barra', representing last year's winning combination of trainer Gordon Elliott and jockey Mark Enright.

'Barra' was unlucky not to win the Midlands National 12 days ago when falling at the last with the race at her mercy.

She will enjoy the trip and ground, is a good jumper, carries a lightweight of 10-3 and has experience of big fields, being a previously placed horse in the Coral Cup at the Cheltenham Festival.

Of the others, 'Black Corton', 'Coney Island' and 'Mengli Khan' have a touch of class and there has been a little bit of money this morning for 'Peregrine Run' and at a price, 'Crosshue Boy'. On the other hand, long-time favourite 'Borice' has been drifting in the betting.

The other horse I like this evening is the Joe Schmidt owned 'Cosmic Horizon' in a one-mile handicap at 8.00.

'Cosmic Horizon' has been running consistently in handicaps and this could be his day. Trainer Joseph O'Brien is having an excellent week and there has been market support for Schmidt's runner.

So I recommend a virtual €10 on the following:

7.20: €3 each way on Barra at 14/1

(1/5 the odds the first six places)

8.00: €2 each way on Cosmic Horizon at 6/1

(1/5 the odds the first four places)

Please gamble responsibly at Galway and good luck!
