It turns out Frank Lampard never had an official agreement to sign for New York City FC.
The Premier League has confirmed that the former England midfielder is solely registered with Manchester City.
It was originally believed Lampard was on loan to the champions, but he is actually on a short-term contract, which has been extended until the end of the season.
Therefore, it is not clear if he will ever move to the Major League Soccer team, who are a sister club of City.
However, the Premier League say the English champions have not broken any transfer rules.
"Frank Lampard is registered as a Manchester City player until the end of the 2014-15 season," the league confirmed in a statement.
"The Premier League has sought and received assurances from Manchester City that there is no agreement in place between the club or City Football Group with New York City FC relating to the player."
