Leinster are poised to launch a formal appeal to have their Heineken Champions Cup match against Montpellier rescheduled.

The game was cancelled this week, ahead of Friday's fixture.

Leinster had reported a small number of positive Covid-19 test results leading into the game.

But they had a squad available for the tie and also received permission from the HSE and public health officials to travel to France.

Montpellier were also said to have had Covid issues, but the EPCR opted to award the French side a 28-0 victory.

This contrasted with the organisers approach to fixtures between British and French clubs.

All of those matches were postponed - and will be rescheduled - after a change in French government laws regarding travel between the two countries.

OTB Sports understands that Leinster will seek for their match against Montpellier to be added to list of games set to be re-fixed.

Yesterday's statement from the EPCR on the re-fixture of the games between French and British clubs read:

"Following a meeting of the EPCR Board today (Friday, 17 December) it has been decided that due to current exceptional circumstances, Round 2 matches in the Heineken Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup between French and UK clubs scheduled for Saturday and Sunday are postponed.

"This is a consequence of new travel measures between the UK and France which are being introduced by the French Government.

"The Board received briefings from the three professional leagues which included updated information from the respective governments, however, there were insufficient assurances that these matches would not be at risk.

"Therefore, the intention is to reschedule,"

The other matches involving Irish provinces this weekend have all been given the go-ahead.

Ulster beat Northampton last night, while Munster take on Castres later today.

Tomorrow, Connacht travel to take on Leicester.
