Limerick county board says they will start the search for John Allen's replacement with immediate effect.
The Cork man's decision to step down was announced at a county board last night.
After helping the Treaty hurlers to claim their first Munster title in 17 years, the board were hoping that Allen would agree to another year in charge.
Meanwhile, the Wexford county board have announced that Liam Dunne has been reappointed as manager of their senior hurlers for another 2-year term.
The re-appointment of the former All Ireland winner was confirmed by a unanimous decision at last night's county board meeting.
