Inconsistency has been a central theme of Liverpool’s season and, for all the talk of dramatic change at Anfield, that inconsistency will feel depressingly familiar to the club’s fans as once again this year their home form against supposedly weaker teams has let them down. With yesterday’s 5-0 hammering of Michael Laudrup’s Swansea Brendan Rodgers’ team managed to shake off, at least temporarily, the poor run of form that had seen them win just one of their previous seven games.

Another running storyline in Brendan Rodgers’ first year as Liverpool manager has been the attempt to introduce a new style of play. There have been signs that his team are learning, albeit not without several frustrating games resulting in dropped points along the way.

It was perhaps fitting that it was against Swansea that Liverpool would score one of the best goals of their season as a mesmerising attacking move showed the very best of the Rodgers plan for Liverpool.
