In a sign that a week in football is an eternity, Wayne Rooney is to be offered a new deal by Manchester United according to reports.

The player who could have been a former Manchester United player, has become a former Chelsea target as it seems almost certain that he will remain at Old Trafford for another season at least.

Rooney will not hand in a transfer request despite lingering concerns with his playing position and Alex Ferguson's claim that he handed in a similar request in May.

But there is a possibility that the situation could come full circle as Man United plan to extend his contract.

Rooney's current deal is up in 2015. However according to reports, any new contract would not be able to offer the lucrative salary of £250,000 per week that Rooney currently benefits from.
