Pep Guardiola and Manchester City will have to wait a little bit longer to get their hands on this season's Premier League trophy.

They were beaten 2-1 by Chelsea at the Etihad on Saturday evening.

Raheem Sterling put the hosts ahead in the first half before Hakim Ziyech and Marcos Alonso scored for Thomas Tuchel's side.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, a frustrated Guardiola said the timing of Chelsea's first goal in the 63rd minute was crucial.

"[It was] a tight game but in general we played really good.

"We missed our chance in the last minute of the first half with the penalty and they're a top side.

"When we were playing better and were in a good position we conceded a goal after we suffered than 10-15 minutes, we reacted well and then at the end they scored. "

Manchester City had a penalty in the first half which Sergio Agüero took but his effort was saved by Edouard Mendy.

They then felt they deserved another spot-kick late on in the game with Raheem Sterling claiming he was fouled by Kurt Zouma in the box.

Guardiola felt the decision in relation to this should have been a simple one.

“It’s [a]  penalty. It has happened, football has happened, we will try the next time to score our penalty and that is all.

“The opinion for the officials and for [referee] Anthony [Taylor], they know it, that is all I can say.

“Sometimes we make mistakes, maybe they believe they did not make a mistake, and that is OK.

“I saw in the TV, it is a penalty, that is all. 88th minute, after you have to score of course, but what can I say? Nothing."

The game was of course a dress rehearsal for the Champions League final at the end of the month.

Chelsea have now beaten Manchester City this season in the Premier League and the FA Cup.

Guardiola though says his focus must be on their next game, which is away to Newcastle next Friday night.

“In 21 days we are going to face them again in the final of the Champions League, we are going to learn from that.

“Now we are going to try to win the three points you need to be champions.”
