Anthony Martial wants to leave Manchester United, according to Ralf Rangnick.

The French international, who has been at the club since 2015, has failed to secure a regular place in the side this season.

He has only started two Premier League matches this term.

Rangnick - speaking ahead of tonight's clash with Newcastle - said Martial made clear his intentions during a conversation between the pair.

We spoke at length on Wednesday," the German said.

"He explained to me he's been at Manchester United now for the last seven years and he feels it's the right time for a change, to go somewhere else

"I think in a way this is understandable, I could follow his thoughts but on the other hand, it's also important to see the situation of the club."

Martial initially made a major impact at Old Trafford, scoring on his debut against Liverpool.

He has 79 goals from 268 appearances, but is now well down the pecking order under Rangnick.

Spain has been mooted as a possible destination for the 26-year-old, but no concrete interest has been shown as yet, Rangnick says.

I told him listen, as long as there is no club showing interest in him, and it should not only be in the interest of the player it should also be in the interest of the club.

"So far, as far as I know, there has been no offer from any other club and as long as this is the case he will stay.

"We have Covid times, we have three competitions in which we still have high ambitions and want to be as successful as we can be."

United's return to league action this evening follows a 16-day lay-off due to Covid-19 issues within the squad.

They are eight points behind fourth-placed Arsenal ahead of kick-off, but do have three games in hand on the Gunners.
