Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has signed a new five-year contract with the Premier League club.

The 20-year old spent last season on-loan at Derby County where he played under new Chelsea manager Frank Lampard. His new deal ties Mount to Stamford Bridge until at least the summer of 2024.

An attacking midfielder by trade, Mount played 44 games in all competitions for Derby last term, scoring 11 goals and assisting a further 6. Mount scored the second in Derby's 4-2 win away to Leeds in May that helped them make the Championship playoff final.

Most recently, Mount scored Chelsea's opening goal in their 4-0 friendly win over St. Patrick's Athletic at Richmond Park at the weekend.

With a transfer ban hovering over the club, the need to secure the future of their brightest youth prospects is imperative for the club, a thought echoed by Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia, "Mason has come right the way through the Chelsea Academy and has always stood out as a fantastic talent and dedicated individual.

"We have monitored his development extremely closely while he has been out on loan and believe he is now ready to be a member of our squad competing at the top of the Premier League.

"Like another of our Academy graduates, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, we are delighted Mason has committed himself to the club this summer and look forward to an exciting future ahead."

Chelsea head for Japan today for the next leg of their pre-season tour. They'll face Kawasaki Frontale in Yokohama on Friday, before a meeting with Barcelona in Saitama on Tuesday week (July 23).

Mount is part of that travelling party, and is delighted to get his new deal signed before stepping on the plane, "It’s a massively proud moment for myself and my family.

"I joined this club at six years old and it was always my goal to play for the first team one day.

"I’m really looking forward to the coming season now and working hard to have an impact here at Chelsea. I’ve been at the club for a long time already and hopefully I’ll stay for a long time to come."
