Floyd Mayweather  will fight undefeated Mexican Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez on September 14th, in Las Vegas, in what looks set to be the pound for pound king’s biggest bout since he fought Oscar De La Hoya in 2007.

The fight will be a light middleweight unification, and reports in the US suggest it will see Maywehater fight Alvarez at a catch-weight of 152 pounds. There will be four titles on the line; Alvarez’s WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine belts, and Mayweather’s WBA “Super” title, which he won from Miguel Cotto last year.

Alvarez is just 22 years of age, 13 years the junior of Mayweather, but can already boast a record of 43 fights, with no defeats and just one draw, earned when he was a teenage fighter in Mexico. Mayweather’s famously blemish free record now stretches to 44 fights undefeated, following his points victory over Robert Guerrero earlier this month.

Alvarez represents a significant challenge for Mayweather as, while perhaps not stylistically more troublesome than others Mayweather has faced, he will provide a massive physical challenge and may go into the ring close to a stone above Mayweather’s fighting weight. The young fighter is a huge star in his homeland, and with the fight taking place on the weekend of Mexican Independence Day the Las Vegas arena will likely be an electric cauldron of support for the youngster.

Mayweather’s largest Pay Per View fight was the 2007 bout with De La Hoya, which hit 2.4 million buys. His most recent fight with Robert Guerrero was around the 1 million mark, while his biggest recent fight – against Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto – hit 1.5 million. The Alvarez bout could surpass the Cotto purse, and may push closer to the De La Hoya numbers.

Mayweather has recently entered a six fight deal with Showtime, and while we can presume the broadcaster was disappointed with the underwhelming response to his first fight, against Guerrero, that disappointment will have surely been offset with the announcement of this bout.
