Graeme McDowell has won the Volvo World Match Play Championship in Bulgaria, thanks to a superb comeback against Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee.
McDowell was two holes down after the first five, but a series of birdies saw the Northern Irishman take the victory 2 & 1 and lift the trophy he missed out on in last year’s final.
McDowell essentially won the tie on the 14th, as Jaidee’s drive ended up in a bush, forcing him to play out sideways. McDowell won the hole with a birdie and took the lead for the first time. He followed up with another birdie on the next hole and maintained that lead with two pars to finish and collect the €800,000 winner’s cheque.
