Rory McIlroy has tweeted his support for Paul McGinley for the Ryder Cup captaincy in 2014, while also publicly making clear his objection to Colin Montgomerie getting a second run as the captain of Europe.

McIlroy made the remarks as several news sources are reporting that Montgomerie is now the favourite to be named the captain for the 2014 tournament, an honour which would make it his second time in the role after he led the European team at Celtic Manor in 2010.

Most people expected the battle for the captaincy to be a contest between Irishmen Paul McGinley and Darren Clarke, , before Clarke effectively withdrew from the running last week.

The decision will be made at tomorrow's meeting of the European Tour's Tournament Players Committee in Abu Dhabi and it had been accepted for some time that McGinley would get the nod following the meeting.

But reports are now suggesting that Monty is now in contention to take-on the job for a second time.

World number one Rory McIlroy tweeted last night to say that he didn't believe anyone should get the job twice and gave his backing to McGinley.
