Kilkenny’s Michael Fennelly believes that, despite their recent history together, the Kilkenny rivalry with Galway hasn’t moved into a space of its own just yet, as every game Kilkenny play is a chance for their opponenets to knock them “off the pedestal”.
“You play Cork, you play Tipp, you play any of those teams; Clare – anybody at all there’s always a big rivalry there because everybody’s trying to knock Kilkenny off the pedestal, so there’s rivalry there with every team,” Fennelly said.
The two sides come together in the Allianz League semi-final this Sunday in what will be their sixth clash sicne last April. Galway won last year’s Leinster final, a game that had some counting Cody’s Kilkenny as a spent force, before the two All-Ireland finals, with a draw and a convincing replay win eventually returning Cody’s men to the top of the hurling pile.
The most recent meeting saw the Tribesmen win in the league and Sunday’s semi-final promises to be another thrilling clash.
Newstalk’s Oisin Langan spoke with Fennelly today and talked to him about the upcoming game with Galway, Brian Cody’s absence and his own injury concerns.
