A 1 - 1 draw away to Shakhtar Donetsk is quite a good result, but the feeling remains that there are major problems at Manchester United in light of recent results.
Last night Ger spoke to Andy Mitten of fanzine United We Stand to ponder whether United are going through a simple blip or if this is the start of a decline.
"I think the West Brom game was the most significant result of the season," said Mitten.
"United have lost at Anfield several times and been well beaten at City. But to lose at home to West Brom, the fans thought 'Woah', this is not normal. David Moyes is still settling in. He'll make mistakes and he's made mistakes already. I spoke to [Chief Executive] Ed Woodward last week and he said United will support him and that he's there for the long run. Fans are broadly behind him but there are doubts."
Mitten believes the squad is still strong despite accusations to the contrary from certain quarters. But he admits that retaining the league is very unlikely with more poor results to come as players get used to new tactics.
However, can Moyes get the best out of some of the mediocre players in the squad in the way that Alex Ferguson could?
"Ferguson was always able to get the best out of these players. There were some pretty poor performances from the likes of Anderson [against West Brom]. Steve Clarke also said he went there to win. Has Old Trafford lost that fear factor? People are trying to take advantage of the fact that Sir Alex Ferguson is no longer in charge and that Moyes is still settling in. How can you settle in at such a big club? Every day he's learning new things and meeting new people. It will take him a year to settle in."
Mitten also gave a hint at Ed Woodward's responses regarding United's farcical summer dealings, an interview that will be released in the next issue of United We Stand.
