Everything that could have gone wrong, did go wrong for Galway yesterday after a crushing defeat to Mayo in their Championship opener.

The Tribesmen conceded four goals - many due to their own errors - while Niall Coleman and Gareth Bradshaw were sent off.

Newstalk Breakfast's Oisin Langan spoke to manager Alan Mulholland after the game to talk over the causes of the heavy defeat.

"I don't think it was one thing that went wrong," said Mulholland. "It was different levels of aggression and intensity on Mayo's behalf. They were at a different level to us in the first half and our guys were not accustomed to it. We were second best all over the pitch. We were always going to have to play to the max but we made some silly errors at the back."

But the Galway bainisteoir was keen not to use the league gap between the two sides as an excuse, although he did cite the quality gap between both sides.

"I am sure that there are Division 2 teams that are capable playing against Division 1 teams better than we did today," said Mulholland. "But there definitely is a gap between us and Mayo at the minute. That's something we have to bridge."
