Munster have secured a home Heineken Cup quarter final with a bonus point 38-6 win over Edinburgh at Thomond Park.
Johne Murphy and James Coughlan were the home side’s try scorers in the first half and Simon Zebo, Peter O’Mahony, Felix Jones and Conor Murray all crossed the line in the second period to wrap up the bonus point that guarantees a home tie in the last 8 of the competition.
The game was only 8 minutes when Coughlan scored his try and from that point on Edinburgh were fighting with their backs to the wall for extended periods. After 21 minutes Murphy had added the second.
Munster started the second half with even more urgency, as Conor Murray was diving over the line after just 3 minutes of the second period.
It was another 15 minutes before O’Mahony got the all valuable fourth try. Simon Zebo then ensured his name was mentioned in debates on Joe Schmidt’s provisional Six Nations squad when he with a simple finish off a Murray pass from a Munster scrum. The winger has been left out of Schmidt’s plans thus far but a good performance today will have gone a long way to easing worries he might not be able to recapture the form he showed last year that earned him a Lions call up. Zebo added an assist to his try when, with 5 minutes left, he made the sixth try as he drew defensive attention and laid the ball off to Felix Jones who was left with a straightforward finish to complete the afternoon’s scoring.
