After failing to spend any money during the summer window, Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has issued a statement about their transfer activity.

He says director of football Joe Kinnear worked hard on "numerous targets", but some of the options that were within their "financial means" were not as good as the players they already had.

French forward Loic Remy was the only significant addition to the squad, moving on loan from QPR, while the Tynesiders brought in five first-team players during the January window.

From Kinnear's arrival to the standoff with Papiss Cisse over the shirt sponsor Wonga, it has been a testing summer for the Magpies, although they were back to winning ways on Saturday.
