Eufemiano Fuentes, the Spanish doctor accused of running one of the world’s most infamous doping operations, has been sentenced to one year in prison for endangering public health.

The controversial blood bags, believe to hold the key to exposing several high profile dopers across various sports, will not be turned over to WADA for examination.

In addition to the prison sentence, Fuentes has been struck off as a doctor for four years. As doping was not illegal in Spain at the time of Fuentes’ crimes the doctor had only faced charges on public health grounds, rather than anti-doping grounds.

In 2006 Spanish police raided Dr. Fuentes’ offices, discovering approximately 200 blood bags, with frozen blood and plasma within and labelled with codenames.

During the trial Fuentes said he had worked with boxers, footballers, cyclists and athletes.

WADA (the World Anti Doping Agency) have long believed the evidence collected in Fuentes’ offices would expose many cyclists, athletes and footballers as doping cheats, and they have previously asked for access to the evidence.

It is unlikely Fuentes will spend time in prison however, as prison terms under 2 years in Spain are often suspended.
