Oscar Pistorius has been charged with murder, according to South African police.
The 26 year old Paralympic gold medallist was arrested earlier today following the fatal shooting of his girlfriend, Reeva Steencamp, at his home near Johannesburg.
Early reports suggested the incident was a tragic accident, however police have played down reports that the Olympian fatally shot his girlfriend after mistaking her for an intruder. According to the AFP, South African police spokeswoman Denise Beukes said "there's previously been incidents of allegations of domestic disputes at the home of the accused."
Furthermore, the police have said they will oppose bail for Pistorius when he appears in court this afternoon.
Pistorius is a sporting icon in South Africa, following his 6 Paralympic gold medals and becoming the first Paralympian to compete in the Olympics when he competed in the 400 metres at the London Olympics.
