Phil Thompson (pictured) says that in the event it is proved Mark Clattenburg did use racist language toward Chelsea players on Sunday during their game against Manchester United then the matter should be dealt with quickly to avoid the controversy dragging on.
However, he also believes that if it was offensive language, rather than racist language, then the event has been blown out of proportion and “smacks of sour grapes” from Chelsea. The former Liverpool defender believes that until players stop using offensive language to referees then they can’t complain when a referee uses it towards them.
Thompson also discussed the Merseyside derby and says Luiz Suarez’s disallowed stoppage time goal (which was later shown to be onside) is proof that video replay technology is badly needed in football. Thompson also believes that the abuse of Luis Suarez, from the stands, opposition managers and the press, could drive the Uruguayan from English football, which Thompson believes would be a terrible loss to football in England.
