Chelsea and Manchester City comfortably reached the FA Cup fourth round after beating Southampton and Watford respectively.

Demba scored a brace on his debut in the London club's 5 - 1 over the Saints, while Mario Balotelli came on as a substitute for the 2011 champions in a 3 - 0 victory.

Clint Dempsey also scored twice as Tottenham brushed League One Coventry aside. Gareth Bale netted in between those strikes.

But there were surprise results today. Earlier in the day Newcastle fell to a 2 - 0 away defeat to Brighton in the early kick-off.

Fulham were held 1 - 1 by Championship side Blackpool while Sunderland had to come from two goals down to earn a replay against second tier Bolton.

Stoke also failed to beat Championship opposition as they played out a 0 - 0 draw with Crystal Palace.

But Aston Villa avoided a shock when they came from a goal down to beat Ipswich 2 - 1 with Darren Bent and Andreas Weimann on the scoresheet.

Championshop leaders Cardiff were stung 2 - 1 by non-league Macclesfield, while fellow Conference side Luton beat struggling Wolves by the same score.
