Rory McIlroy started the first day of the Masters with a 72, to leave him on level par, six shots down on leader Sergio Garcia and two strokes behind the resurgent Tiger Woods.

Ronan Rafferty was encouraged by his fellow Northern Irishman's performance on the Augusta course but feels there are areas to iron out:

"I think he will be very disappointed with what happenend on the back nine. He gave away a lot of very bad putts, particularly the one on 17 after a very good drive.

"I look at it a different way. He played really nicely and I think he will be kicking himself for not reaching 68. I think it was a bit of a giveaway but there are a lot of positives when I look at the teeshots that he hit."

Rafferty also talked to Newstalk Breakfast's Oisin Langan about Padraig Harrington's poor round of 78 and whether this is Sergio Garcia's year after his fine start:
