Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal claims picking Wayne Rooney in midfield gives his team a "better balance".

The England captain ended up playing in a deeper role during last night's 3-1 win over Burnley in the Premier League, after Daley Blind went off injured.

Rooney's barely played in his favoured role up front this season, and Van Gaal says his skipper is very versatile.

"I was very pleased how we replaced Daley Blind on the six position," said the former Barcelona manager. "He was also today not the Rooney that I want to see, but he has showed that he can play in every position."
