He was just ahead of reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel and China race winner Fernando Alonso.
Lewis Hamilton was fourth fastest, but he has incurred a five-place penalty for a gearbox change.

Fellow British driver Paul di Resta was 7th quickest behind the Red Bull of Mark Webber and the second Ferrari of Felipe Massa, with Jenson Button back in 10th.
