Wednesday night's rearranged SSE Airtricity Premier Division meeting of Shamrock Rovers and Derry City has been called off.

It's after a player and a backroom staff member at the Candystripes tested positive for COVID-19.

The game was originally scheduled for October 16, but was among a number of Rovers postponements after Aaron Greene and Jack Byrne tested positive for coronavirus.

The FAI have been informed by Derry that Northern Ireland’s Public Health Agency has stood down their entire first team squad and staff for a 14-day period of self-isolation, until November 6 following three positive tests.

Derry's failure to fulfil the fixture at Tallaght Stadium will be referred to the FAI’s Disciplinary Committee.

Sunday's FAI Cup quarter-final meeting of Sligo Rovers and Derry has also been postponed, with potential new dates to be discussed.

It's a very real prospect that Declan Devine's side may have to concede the Rovers fixture. Time is at a premium to complete the Premier Division season, and its finish date has already been pushed out once to November 8.

Rovers secured an eighteenth league title at the weekend when Bohemians went down 2-0 at home to Finn Harps.

But Derry's top flight status is still not secure. With three games to play they're still in danger of sliding into the relegation playoff spot.
