Russia faces a four-year ban from sporting events after a World Anti-Doping Agency committee report recommended a ban of Russian athletes from taking part in a number of sporting events.

That means the staging of Euro 2020 games in St. Petersburg next summer is under threat with the Krestovsky Stadium set to host group games and a quarter-final.

The recommendations were made by WADA's independent Compliance Review Committee and will be put to the executive committee on December 9.

Russia could also be banned from next year's Tokyo Olympics and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Wada's compliance review committee (CRC) recommended a raft of measures after declaring the Russian Anti-Doping Agency non-compliant over inconsistencies in anti-doping data.

The CRC made its recommendations based "in particular" on a forensic review of inconsistencies found in some of the data obtained by the agency from the Moscow Laboratory in January 2019.

The CRC recommendations did, however, leave the door open for the participation of Russians similar to the 2018 Winter Games where some of the country's athletes competed as neutrals under the Olympic flag.

These athletes would have to demonstrate that they are clean and meet a number of other strict conditions.

One of the proposals is to withdraw the right to host an event already awarded unless it's "legally and practically impossible".

That would prevent Russia from bidding for the right to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Another recommendation from the 26-page report is to make sure that the Russian flag may not be flown at any major event staged in the four-year period,

Russia can appeal any sanctions to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
