Celtic defender Liam Scales has been called up to the Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming games against Azerbaijan and Qatar.

The 23-year old former Shamrock Rovers defender replaces Swansea City defender Ryan Manning, who was forced to withdraw due to injury.

Scales linked up with Stephen Kenny's squad before they departed to Baku on Wednesday and has played under the Republic of Ireland boss at under-21 level.

The former Arklow Town FC man joined Celtic from Shamrock Rovers in August and made his debut for the Scottish Premiership side in a League Cup win over Raith Rovers last month.

The Boys in Green are yet to win a game in Group A of the World Cup qualifiers and drew 1-1 with Azerbaijan in Dublin in September.
