With the clock striking 90 minutes, Wigan were on course to leave the relegation zone on goal difference until an own goal from Emerson Boyce gave Tottenham a share of the spoils at the DW Stadium.
The 2 - 2 result will disappoint both sides who are chasing contrasting goals.
It was Spurs who took the lead, however, early in the first half when the fit-again Gareth Bale profited from a horrendous clearance from Wigan goalkeeper Joel Robles which rebounded off the Welshman and straight into the net.
But the Latics hit back straight away with Boyce heading in a corner.
And just after the break Callum McManaman gave Wigan the lead with a long-range strike which set them up for all three points.
But Roberto Martinez' side were unable to hold on as Boyce diverted an Aaron Lennon cross into his own net.
Spurs could have snatched all three points in injury time but they were unable to get the ball over the goalline during a desperate goal mouth scramble.
The result leaves Tottenham fifth and Wigan in 18th.
Everton tightened their grip on sixth place and are just three points off a Top Four place after a 1 - 0 win over Fulham at Goodison Park.
Steven Pienaar got the only goal of the game in the 16th minute, converting a Seamus Coleman cross.
West Brom got back to winning ways with a 3 - 0 away win at Southampton with Shane Long on the scoresheet.
Marc Antoine Fortune gave the Baggies the lead before Romelu Lukaku made it 2 - 0 in the second half.
And Long rounded off the game with a close range finish.
However the game was marred by three red cards with Saints pair Danny Fox and Gaston Ramirez and West Brom's Fortune dismissed.
