'A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...'

It's one of the most famous music cues of them all. John Williams' instantly recgonisable theme tune to Star Wars - as well as equally iconic compositions like the Imperial March - has helped the soundtrack achieve the largest chunk of the votes in a poll for BBC's Sound of Cinema season.

Only two soundtracks managed to achieve over 10% in the twenty film poll: Star Wars at 21% and 17% for Ennio Morricone's timeless score for The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. The rest of the list is populated by familiar names such as Leonard Bernstein, Bernard Hermann and Rodgers & Hammerstein. There's also a few selections that heavily utilise classical music, such as Billy Elliot and Apocalypse Now.

A few new films have managed to sneak in as well: both The Dark Knight Rises and Django Unchained likely benefited from still being fresh in people's minds. A pair of Bollywood films round out the top 20.

Since it was a multiple choice poll with the selections pre-deterimined by the broadcaster and film music experts, many favourites are absent: it wouldn't be much of a stretch to say more Williams and Morricone would have made the cut in other circumstances.
