Liverpool and Luis Suarez have decided against appealing the player's ten game ban. The ban was handed to the player by an Independent Regulatory Commission earlier this week for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.
This means Suarez might not play competitively for the club again until early October. The Football Association is expected to release the reasons behind the decision to give the player a ten game ban at some point today.
Rumours began circulating yesterday that Suarez was considering leaving English football as a result of the ban, which he feels is exccessive. Brendan Rodgers publicly questioned the length of the ban, wondering if it was aimed at “the man rather than the incident”.
Earlier today British Prime Minister David Cameron commented on the matter, saying Suarez’s act set “the most appalling example” for young children.
The FA released the following statement:
"Liverpool forward Luis Suarez has not appealed the suspension issued to him by an Independent Regulatory Commission this week.
A three-person Independent Regulatory Commission upheld The FA's claim that a suspension of three matches was clearly insufficient and the player will now serve a further seven first-team matches in addition to the standard three.
The suspension begins with immediate effect and applies to Liverpool FC's next 10 domestic first-team fixtures.
This sanction followed an incident with Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic in Sunday's fixture at Anfield (21 April 2013).
The FA intends to publicise the Independent Regulatory Commission's written reasons in due course."
