Although Borussia Dortmund and Malaga had the same number of shots on target (7) last Wednesday, Dortmund clearly showed more impetus by having more shot attempts overall.

And those Dortmund chances were clear-cut and should have been put away, most notably Mario Gotze's one-on-one with the keeper in the first half and Robert Lewandowski's missed sitter.

But Dortmund will be confident of doing a job on Malaga tonight at the Westfalenstadion.

Take a look at the team shapes from the first leg:

As you can see Dortmund use their traditional template of a high line, intense pressing and Jurgen Klopp's 4-2-3-1 with Lewandowski at the point of the attack.

Despite being more of a counter-attacking machine (with a technical edge), Dortmund did have 50 per cent of possession and used it well, with particular emphasis on the instinctive link up play between German internationals Marco Reus and Mario Gotze scything through the opposition defense.

Interestingly Dortmund really narrowed the central section of the pitch with Ilkay Gundogan and captain Sebastian Kehl covering much of the same ground, which allowed full-backs Marcel Schmelzer and Lukasz Piszczek to drive forwards.

Dortmund's most frequent base of attack was from the left sided centre-half Felipe Santana over to Gundogan who then fed Gotze and Reus who played off Lewandowski. Tonight the attacks will start from outstanding ball playing centre-back Mats Hummels who has returned to fitness while Kuba Blaszczykowski is likely to replace Kevin Grosskreutz on the wing.

Malaga will hope to break that chain. Perhaps that explains why they played what looks like a lopsided system. Nominally a 4-4-2, wingers Isco and Joaquin pushed high up the field despite the threat from Dortmund's full backs, while former Arsenal striker Julio Baptista dropped into a slightly deeper position than his strike partner Javier Saviola.

The fact that their midfielders Jeremy Toulalan and Manuel Iturra (and Dortmund's pair) were almost on top of each other suggests that the midfield will be extremely congested tonight and that both teams will hit each other on the counter.
