Galatasaray's naivety may cost them again against Real Madrid

In his famous work 'The Prince', Niccolo Machiavelli claims that it is better to be feared than to be loved or hated.

However Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid would rather meet impulsive teams fuelled by passion like the Galatasaray side they defeated 3 - 0 in the Bernabeu last Wednesday night.

There is one way to face this current Real Madrid side and live to tell the tale. Sitting back and soaking up pressure like Manchester United did at the Bernabeu in the last-16 is the template.

Denying Cristiano Ronaldo, Mesut Ozil and Angel Di Maria space to charge into on the counter has a similar effect to getting a dentist to yank out a shark's teeth. They can bite but they are less able to cause damage when patience is required in front of a massed defence.

Ronaldo and co could still have beaten a team like Galatasaray because of their star quality - but they would need to play less sloppily than they did in the first leg.

But Galatasaray made it easy for them by being far too adventurous.

Look at their formation above. Terim deployed something that resembled a 4-3-1-2 with Didier Drogba and Burak Yilmaz often criss-crossing the same area, while Wesley Sneijder was abysmal.

The Dutchman is reluctant to play anywhere other than the space between midfield and attack. But in truth he is past his sell by date and cannot be indulged in such a fashion without affecting the shape and cohesion of the team. Unsurprisingly he was subbed off at half-time for an extra defender.

Terim's temptation to attack Madrid probably had some basis in the fact that Real are poor defensively. And the Turkish side did waste a number of presentable opportunities, but in reality the risk was not worth it.

Compare the Istanbul giants' first leg shape to United's shape during the 1 - 1 draw at the Bernabeu last month.

United may have superior players but they also made life easier for themselves by playing a more cautious, compact formation and by denying Jose Mourinho and his team the space they crave. Particular focus should centre on the respective amount of space between the full backs and centre backs in both matches.

Unfortunately Galatasaray have no use for fear and have to attack Real with everything they have got to overturn a 3 - 0 deficit which will suit Mourinho's game plan down to the ground.
