Olympic debutant Tanya Watson is through to the semi-finals of the 10-metre platform diving.

The 19-year-old - Ireland's first-ever female diver at an Olympics - came through this morning's preliminary round.

She finished in 16th place after amassing a score of 289.4.

The top-18 competitors qualified.

Elsewhere, Leona Maguire is five shots off the lead in the women's golf after the opening day.

The Cavan native carded a level-par 71 in the sweltering heat in Tokyo.

That leaves her five shots off leader Madelene Sagstrom of Sweden.

Stephanie Meadow is one shot further back.

The Antrim woman finished strongly to eventually sign for a 72.

Meadow found herself at three-over-par through 15 holes, but birdies on 16 and 17 helped her finish in a tie for 36th at the end of day one.

Maguire's round featured three birdies and three bogies.

A bogey on the fourth was followed by a first birdie on the fifth.

Then there were two of each on the back nine, which all added up to a 71.

That's in a tie for 23rd.

A familiar foe of Maguire's is in second place.

Nelly Korda of the USA is at four-under.

Korda and Maguire went head-to-head at the Meijer Classic on the LPGA Tour in June, with the American eventually winning by two shots.

Hopes are high that the Irish duo can contend for a medal.

Maguire in particular is enjoying a good spell of form, including two runner-up finishes and three top-10s on the LPGA Tour in recent months.

She also posted a superb closing round of 61 at the Evian Championship for a tied-sixth finish.

Meadow, too, has spoken of her upturn in form recently, including a tied-29th finish at the Evian Championship.

Conditions in Japan are challenging, with temperatures in excess of 35 degrees.
