Those with an eye for hedgerow placement and a love of Stanley Kubrick can now bring those passions together with a new competition to design the maze at the hotel that inspired The Shining.

The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, is the insidious inn that inspired horror maestro Stephen King to write the novel which became the Jack Nicholson movie. But the hedge maze that features prominently in the film’s final reels isn’t actually a part of King’s version.

Now the hotel has launched open submissions from members of the public to design a maze on the hotel’s grounds. The goal is simple: anyone can enter a design to fill the 5,700 square-meter space, complete with up to 2,000 Aspen currant bushes to confuse those brave – or desperate – enough to enter.

The hotel has created a PDF template of the maze schematics, and the deadline is midnight on January 31st.

The winner will see his or her maze developed and have their name placed on a placard at its centre - as well as a trip to the hotel to see it. Just hope you don’t get put in room 42, where the TV plays nothing but The Shining 24/7.
