Plenty of footballers from Australia and New Zealand have plied their trade in the Premier League. But Australia’s A League is generally not considered to be a prime location for scouts.

But there is plenty of speculation suggesting that the Australian League’s reigning Player of the Year is set to join Liverpool.

Marco Rojas, who is of Chilean descent, has announced his departure from Melbourne Victory and confirmed that he is moving to Europe next season.

Liverpool are thought to be leading the race to secure the signature of a player that won this season’s Young Player Award.

The 21-year-old New Zealand international, who has earned over a dozen caps, can play as an attacking midfielder or as a winger.

Rojas was third in the A-League scoring charts with 15 goals, outscoring veterans like Alessandro Del Piero and Emile Heskey (perhaps not a tough task in the latter's case), while he also had the joint-second highest number of assists in the league with seven.

He was also a prominent member of his country’s U20 World Cup team which qualified for the 2011 tournament.

In an Antipodean context at least, he is one of the most exciting talents to have emerged out of that region of the globe in recent years, earning the moniker of the 'Kiwi Messi'. But whether he can adapt to the faster pace of English football will decide whether he can make it at Anfield.
