Name: John Guidetti
Club: Manchester City
Nationality: Swedish
Position: Striker
Who is he?
Born in Sweden, but raised in Kenya where his father worked, Guidetti started his career with Swedish club Brommapojkarna. But in 2008, aged 16, he joined Manchester City's youth academy. However he was loaned back to his old club in 2010.
Achievements
Guidetti really made his breakthrough on loan at Dutch club Feyenoord in 2011/12 when he netted 20 league goals in just 23 games as the Rotterdam giants reached the Champions League qualfiers. Those 20 goals included a trio of hat-tricks.
Off the back of that club success, Guidetti earned a call up to the Sweden squad, making his debut against Croatia last February as a second half substitute. To date that is his only senior cap for the Nordic nation.
Attributes
The 20-year-old is a prolific goalscorer, with an excellent chance conversion rate so far in his short career. Guidetti is quick and technical as well tall and physically strong, which allows him to lead the line effectively. He is also a good team player, having provided eight assists last season.
Potential
He has great potential but he has two problems - one being Manchester City. Roberto Mancini was key in convincing him to stay at the Etihad. But in the long-term Guidetti should be concerned that City are rumoured to be in the market for at least one striker this summer and do not seem to be thinking of promoting from within.
However in the short-term a career-threatening illness also contributed to his problems over the past 12 months. Towards the end of his time at Feyenoord, the youngster suffered a mysterious bout of food poisoning which affected his nervous system and left his right leg paralysed. He is still working his way back to full fitness.
It is no wonder that Guidetti is not in the squad to face Ireland on Friday in the World Cup qualifiers, seeing as he has had no top level game time this season. But if he can recover and get game time at City or on loan next season, he could fulfill his rich potential.
