Phil Thompson says Shane Long isn’t consistent enough or "of the quality” to play for Liverpool. The Anfield legend told Newstalk Breakfast’s Oisin Langan that while Long has had really good spells this year, and he thinks he’s a good player, he doesn’t think the ex-Cork City striker is “of the quality for Liverpool” and worries that Long is “inconsistent as a goal scorer”.
There have been rumours in recent weeks that Long could be a transfer target for Liverpool in January following an excellent start to the season with West Brom, but Thompson doesn’t believe Long would be what the Merseyside club needs.
Thompson also spoke about his disgust at the scenes at the Etihad Stadium yesterday, as Rio Ferdinand was hit with a coin thrown from the Manchester City crowd. Thompson called the incident “disgusting” and “disgraceful” while also condemning the throwing of coins at Wayne Rooney as he lined up a corner kick. He suggested that perhaps netting around the corners of the pitch might stop incident of fans throwing coins at players. Thompson was, however, happy to admit that yesterday’s game was perhaps “the best premier league game of the season” and a “wonderful spectacle.”
