Today's top '88 moment is Ronnie Whelan's incredible bicycle kick in Ireland's Group B match against USSR.
It was towards the end of the first half when long throw specialist Mick McCarthy made an enormous throw right into the path of midfielder Ronnie Whelan. The ball dropped over the heads of two Soviet defenders and Whelan swung his leg around and sent the ball past a diving Rinat Dasaev into the net.
If Ireland had held onto its 1-0 lead it would have been enough to go through to the semi-finals; while the USSR inevitably came back with their own goal, Whelan's spectacular bicycle kick would be forever remembered as one of the greatest moments of Euro 1988.
