Toulon have won their first Heineken Cup, with a narrow 16-15 victory over Clermont Auvergne at the Aviva Stadium.
Clermont appeared to have the game sewn up, as two early second half tries from Napolioni Nalaga and Brock James put daylight between the sides and momentum seemed to be entirely with the men from Auvergne. The dominance was temporary, however, as they allowed Toulon back into the game with a Delon Armitage try (supplemented by some excellent kicking from Johnny Wilkinson). Ultimately Clermont could never get their moemntum back and wasted several good chances to claw the lead back in the final moments.
David Skrela had a late drop goal attempt charged down by Matthieu Bastareaud and a desperate Toulon defence rapidly stacked up the tackle count as they kept the Clermont attack at bay. Even with huge gaps in the Toulon defence in the final seconds, Clermont could not make the breakthrough and Johnny Wilkinson and Toulon were crowned kings of Europe.
