UFC star Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone has found himself in trouble after using a homophobic slur in an interview.

Cerrone was taking part in a panel along with CM Punk and John Gooden for the UFC's Fight Pass coverage of the event, when the topic turned to the fight between Daniel Cormier and Anderson Silva.

The bout, which was rescheduled at short notice due to Jon Jones returning a potential positive doping test result, saw Cormier win by unanimous decision. However, fans were not too happy that the fight, which was originally scheduled to be the main event before Jones was pulled, had been a bit of a conservative affair, mainly thanks to Cormier's approach.

Speaking about the fact that Cerrone weighed in at 206lbs, while Silva tipped the scales at 198.5lbs, according to MMA Fighting, 'Cowboy' Cerrone said "how you gonna give up weight and then fight like a f*g, man?".

Afterwards, Cerrone took to Instagram to apologise, stating that he has "so many friends and fans in the LGBTQ community who I let down today. I can and will be better because I respect the community and equality."

The post has since been removed.

Some of his fellow fighters have also taken to social media to support him in the wake of the interview, including middleweight Derek Brunson.

The comment comes in the same week as Amanda Nunes became the first openly gay champion in the UFC.
