Do you remember The Simpsons? Probably the most important television comedy of all time? Well, you're no doubt aware that the series is long, long past its glory days, although somehow still attracting millions of viewers as it broadcasts its 25th season.

While most of us are probably happy to stick with repeats of those glorious 1990s episodes, the show's creators do occasionally come up with a moment that captures some of that humour of the classics. This year, they've drafted in director Guillermo del Toro to create the 'couch gag' for the 24th Treehouse of Horror episode. And it's rather magnificent.

The almost three-minute-long sequence is a whirlwind tour through horror history, including dozens of 'blink and you'll miss it' references to horror cinema. There's Alfred Hitchcock, The Shining, The Day the Earth Stood Still and many, many more. Oh, and a host of nods to del Toro's own films Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy and Blade.
