La Liga
Last season's Copa del Rey Final triumph by Atletico Madrid over city rivals Real has opened up a temporary shift in power in the Madrid derby balance.
Saturday's win away at the Bernabeu came courtesy of Diego Costa's goal and was Atletico's first league win over Real since 1999-2000.
Under Diego Simeone, Atletico has been a rising power and currently sit at the top of La Liga, behind Barcelona on goal difference and five points clear of a stuttering Real Madrid.
Expect this hard-working Atletico to make a better fist of the La Liga title race this season, although winning it may be a step too far.
Barcelona also earned a club-record seventh straight league win to stay top. But they lost Lionel Messi to a thigh injury shortly after he scored. He will be out for two to three weeks but should feature in October's Clasico.
Serie A
If Arsenal fans had witnessed Gervinho's performance for Roma last night, maybe a (very) small part of them will want him back at the Emirates.
The Ivorian scored twice last night in a performance brimming with pace and direct dribbling as Roma hammered Bologna 5 - 0.
That win means Roma have won six from six this season to go top of Serie A. They have the best defensive record in Europe this season, conceding just once. Certainly, manager Rudi Garcia is doing something right as well as getting the best out of one of his former players in the shape of Gervinho.
Rafa Benitez' Napoli got back to winning ways at Genoa after a disappointing draw the previous week, while title favourites Juventus came out on via a Paul Pogba goal in the Turin derby against Torino.
Bundesliga
Borussia Dortmund continue to top the Bundesliga after a facile 5 - 0 victory at home to Freiburg. Robert Lewandowski and Marco Reus both scored twice for Jurgen Klopp's side, while Bayern Munich kept pace with a narrow win at home to Wolfsburg.
