Wigan left it late to bag a 2-1 win at home to Newcastle. Jean Beausejour put Wigan ahead 20mins in and Davide Santon equalised 20mins from the end.
But Aroune Kone stabbed home a late winner although there was more than a hint of a Wigan hand ball in the lead into the winner. Wigan are now just three points from safety as they aim to produce another escape act.
However the match was marred by a terrible challenge by Wigan's Callum McManaman on Newcastle's Massadio Haidara which is set to sideline the Frenchman for a lengthy period with a serious knee injury.
In the other 4pm game, Chelsea moved up to third after beating West Ham 2- 0 at Stamford Bridge. Frank Lampard opened the scoring with his 200th goal for the club before Eden Hazard wrapped it up.
