Wayne Rooney was meant to be preparing for two World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine, but a head injury suffered in training with Manchester United had ruled him out.

Many sceptics had claimed that the injury sustained in a clash with Phil Jones was superficial. But the images published by Rooney on his Facebook page reveal a very deep gash on his forehead.

Earlier England team-mate Theo Walcott said he had seen pictures of the injury, saying: "It is a very big gash. It is not a nice sight, to be honest. It is not going to help his looks, I wouldn't think. It's not very nice to see. It's like something out of a horror film."

He's not wrong...
