Waterford county board say they will now look for nominations for the vacant manager position adding that the job will be open to all interested parties.

In statement following an Executive county board meeting last night the board thanked Michael Ryan and his management team for their hard work and commitment adding that he is entitled to re-apply following the ending of his term after their defeat to Kilkenny.

Ryan confirmed in recent days he would not seek to re-apply for the position or continue on for another term after reportedly losing the support of the players

This statement very much leaves the way open for outside candidates such as Donal Og Cusack or Liam Sheedy but there are one or two interested parties in the Deise including Derek McGrath who has worked with many of the counties best at Colleges and club level.

Cusack and Sheedy are deeply ensconced in the Sunday Game so whether or not they would want the hassle of inter county management is uncertain, also if Sheedy wanted to go back into inter county management he probably could have done so last year when Tipp were looking to replace Declan Ryan.

Derek McGrath led De Le Salle to a county title last season but not capturing Munster came as a huge disappointment while Ken McGrath is another name in the hat but he may not be ready to take such a role on his own and could form part of a dream ticket with a more experienced name.

The players have yet to make an official statement on the course of action they have  taken meaning rumour and hearsay is beginning to fill the vacuum something which is not helpful to them or anyone else involved.

Waterford Executive Statement in full

On behalf of the Executive of CLG Port Lairge, the term of office of the current Management team and panel ended with our defeat to Kilkenny.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude and thanks to Michael Ryan - Team Manager, his selectors, panel of players and back room staff.

Michael has given a lifetime of service to the GAA and has given 100% dedication and commitment during his term as Waterford Senior Hurling Manager.

His knowledge and level of input cannot be questioned. The Executive would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge this.

In looking forward to the 2014 season, we will be seeking nominations, as is the norm, for a new management team.

The position of Manager will be open to all interested parties. Should the outgoing Manager wish to put his name forward, it will be considered equally with all others who may express an interest.

There will be no further comment from the Executive on this matter.

END OF STATEMENT.
