Manchester United weren"t the only club popular with the people of Cork to travel to the Ali Sami Yen stadium for Champions League action in 1993. League of Ireland champions Cork City faced the Turkish champions in the round prior to their metting with Sir Alex Ferguson"s side.

Cork lost 2-1 in the first leg game in the Turkish capital, a Dave Barry goal giving the Rebel Army hope for the return leg. Sadly a 1-0 defeat at Bishopstown sent Galatasaray through to the next round where they faced United.

You can watch the highlights of the game, including Cork"s goal in the first leg, below. You can, also, incredibly, watch the highlights of the game in Cork with what we can only presume is Turkish commentary.

Turkish commentary of a 1993 Cork City game is good enough, but it"s even better when the commentator sounds as if he is broadcasting from inside a phone box, regularly searching his pockets for a few pence to keep the distorted line open.

Commentators on phones is one of those things that football willl always be poorer without. There was nothing quite like Geroge Hamilton"s tinny voice describing, in broken syllables, another long ball attack from Jack Charlton"s Ireland in some far flung, unexplored corner of the European football map.
