Ireland’s Ambassador to the United Nations has rejected claims the body made against the State in relation to abortion in Ireland.
Patricia O’Brien addressed the UN's Human Rights Council in Geneva today to respond to the oral statements and recommendations previously made about Ireland in relation to abortion by other UN member states.
Ireland’s record on Travellers was also addressed.
Research and Policy Officer with the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, Pia Janning, watched Patricia O’Brien's speech in Geneva today.
She told Newstalk Drive: "I suppose the Ambassador was rehashing the same line that we've heard time and time again from the Government - particularly over the last number of months now that we know that a Citizens' Assembly is being established.
"Really the Government position is 'well we're considering this issue through the Citizens' Assembly, and that's as much as we're going to say on the matter at present'."
It was confirmed earlier this week that the assembly will hold its first public meeting on Saturday October 15th.
Meanwhile, Ms Janning said a document has been published where the Government has gone through other UN recommendations that have been outstanding.
"What we found that a lot of the responses provided to the recommendations are extremely vague - there is absolutely no detail at all and no justification for the position that the State is taking."
