Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a fatal shooting in west Dublin.

The incident happened in the driveway of a house at St Ronan's Drive in Clondalkin on Thursday at around 5.10pm.

Initial investigations show a lone male entered the driveway of a house and fired a number of shots - fatally injuring the driver of a car.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger in the car was uninjured.

The lone male then left the scene and is believed to have got into a white Peugeot Partner van with registration '10-CE-9834'.

This van was found burnt out a short distance away at the Neilstown Shopping Centre.

A full investigation has been launched and an incident room has been established at Lucan garda station on 01-666-7300.

Investigating gardaí are appealing for witnesses - particularly those people who were in the area prior to the incident and immediately after the shooting and who may have information - or who may have seen anything unusual or suspicious to contact them at Lucan garda station, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111 or any garda station.

"A scourge on Dublin"

Cathal McMahon is a journalist with Independent.ie. He told Newstalk Drive this is thought to be gang-related.

"All indications at this point would point to the fact that this is connected to the Hutch and Kinahan feud.

"This man would have been an associate, or would have been known, to Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch - one of the men at the centre of this feud.

"We know this man was originally from the north inner-city...it is possible he was living in the area or visiting someone in the area.

"Certainly this gang appeared to have had knowledge of his moments, and carried out the attack ruthlessly - and the intention obviously being there to kill this man".

Sinn Féin deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald has strongly condemned the killing.

She described a spate of shootings in recent months as "a scourge on Dublin and its people".

Deputy McDonald has called on anybody with any information about this murder to bring it to the attention of An Garda Síochána.

"I condemn in the strongest possible terms the shooting in Ronanstown earlier tonight. I want to say of those involved that they are a scourge on Dublin and the good people of our city.

"They go about their brutal business with no concern for the fear that they inflict on our communities and with zero regard for the innocents who may be caught up in their terrible acts.

"I am urging anybody with information to make that available to An Garda Síochána."

She added: "This violence must be brought to an end rapidly, before any more lives are lost."
