The Energy Minister believes Ireland couldn't afford to put Grid West underground, if it ends up being three times the price of a pylon network.
Eirgrid is today unveiling an alternative proposal for a high capacity power connection linking Mayo to the national grid, along local and regional roads.
It is expected it would be more expensive than the existing overground plan which would cost an estimated €240 million.
Both suggestions will go before an independent panel for examination, but the government will have the final say if they are both seen as being viable.
Speaking to the Pat Kenny Show here on Newstalk, Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte says cost will be taken into account:
Earlier, the head of Eirgrid said no-one should pre-judge which is the right option.
Chief Executive Fintan Slye told Newstalk's Breakfast they want to take public concerns into account:
Sean Meaghar, Project Manger Gridwest, told Midwest Radio no cost analysis for the project has been undertaken so far:
Before any decision is made, both potential schemes will be examined by an independent panel the government set up earlier this year in response to public concern over plans for the national grid.
